LOVB Austin is headed back to the championship stage, surviving a dramatic semifinal series against LOVB Atlanta that ultimately came down to a decisive golden set.
After Atlanta evened the series with a five-set victory (25-23, 25-19, 22-25, 31-29, 15-11), Austin responded, pulling away for a 15-8 win in the golden set to clinch a spot in this week’s LOVB Championship. Austin will play the winner of the Houston-Salt Lake series.
“This is what gritty feels like,” said Austin coach Erik Sullivan. “We didn’t play our best volleyball all the time, but the way we showed up in the golden set was phenomenal. We earned another week together.”
The semifinal delivered throughout, with both teams trading momentum in a back-and-forth battle defined by long rallies and late-set drama.
Atlanta struck first, edging the opening set and riding the offensive production of Ivonee Montaño, who finished with a match-high 33 kills in the five-set win. Austin answered in the second behind strong play at the net from Asjia O’Neal and timely serving, including key aces from Logan Eggleston.
The swings continued from there.
Atlanta reclaimed control in the third set, and the fourth became the turning point of the match. Austin outlasted Atlanta in a marathon 31-29 set before Atlanta regrouped to take the fifth and force the golden set.
With everything on the line, Austin delivered its cleanest stretch of volleyball.
The defending League One Volleyball champions jumped out to a 6-3 lead in the golden set and never relinquished control. Behind a momentum-shifting block from Eggleston, Austin closed on a decisive run to secure the 15-8 victory.
“That’s a really good Atlanta team,” she said. “To be able to be resilient, play through some of our lows and still come out on top gives us a lot of confidence.”
Austin now advances to the LOVB Championship in Long Beach, California where it will look to secure back-to-back league titles.
