Austin Sports Journal
When I began this venture two years ago, my intent was for the Austin Sports Journal to be an alternative to traditional sports media while still adhering to traditional journalistic standards.
We are locally owned, meaning our coverage is determined by what matters to you and not by a group of executives in New York focused on the bottom line.
It’s no secret the Austin metropolitan area is growing, and so is the Austin Sports Journal’s audience.
Our coverage of high school sports in our 13-county area is robust. I’d argue we provide the best high school sports coverage you can find anywhere; all bias aside.
Because of that high school coverage, the Austin Sports Journal’s audience reach touches every corner of our coverage area, which expanded to Comal County a few months ago.
Digital subscriptions continue to grow, and page views and audience reach are breaking records each month. This growth requires a greater investment in our coverage and in what the Austin Sports Journal does.
The first step is investing even more in our high school coverage throughout the Austin area.
In addition to picking up the five high schools in Comal County (Pieper, Davenport, Canyon Lake, Canyon, and New Braunfels), we have gradually added coverage of Austin private schools in TAPPS and the Southwest Preparatory Conference.
Because of our expansion, I am actively hiring freelance writers to help with our 2025 football and volleyball preview magazines and Friday night football coverage this fall. You read that right – we will be at more games and doing more with our football coverage this fall.
With our rapid growth, there is also a growing possibility of full-time opportunities in the future. If you or someone you know is interested in writing for the Austin Sports Journal, email me at madams@austinsportsjournal.com.
Continuing with the theme of expansion, common feedback I get from readers and advertisers alike is: why doesn’t the ASJ cover any college sports? It’s valid feedback.
Quite frankly, Texas Longhorns coverage is oversaturated in the local Austin market. We are still establishing and expanding our footprint across the Austin area, so we would be a little fish in a very big pond.
That’s not to say you won’t see the occasional Longhorn story from the Austin Sports Journal. There will come a day in the near future when the Austin Sports Journal begins regular coverage of the Longhorns. For now, my focus is continuing to do what we do best.
However, the feedback did get me thinking.
If the goal of the Austin Sports Journal is to be an alternative to traditional sports media, is there an underserved college market with a growing audience? That led me 30 miles down I-35 to San Marcos.
I am happy to announce that the Austin Sports Journal is adding Texas State athletics to its coverage.
You’ll begin to see the occasional story this spring as the baseball and softball teams chase Sun Belt Conference championships. We’ll ramp up coverage of the Bobcats in the upcoming football season.
Texas State is a bolstering football program with growing interest around the Austin area. It’s a perfect fit for the Austin Sports Journal.
That being said, I want to be clear – coverage of Texas State will not come at the expense of our robust high school sports coverage. Our high school coverage will continue to take priority.
My mission remains the same: To connect communities through authentic sports journalism by providing news and information that celebrates achievement and captures moments that bring people together.
With an ever-growing audience, it’s time to expand our content and our audience reach. I want the Austin Sports Journal to become your No. 1 source for all things Texas State Bobcats and Austin-area high school sports. Join us on this journey and support Austin’s only locally owned source of sports news.
I always welcome feedback. If you have any thoughts or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to me at madams@austinsportsjournal.com.
