Leander takes control of bi-district series with win over Veterans Memorial

Without a extra-base hit, the Lions make the most of opportunities

LEANDER – The Leander Lions strung together 10 hits against Veterans Memorial’s Adelina Vallejo, yet not one of them went for extra bases.

Still, the Lions (29-5) plated four runs to defeat the Patriots 4-1 Thursday at Lion Field in Leander in the first game of a best-of-three Class 5A bi-district playoff series.

Indiana signee Madalyn Strader went 2 for 3 with an RBI, while catcher Emery Bell went 2 for 2.

The Lions strung their four runs over the first five innings to build a 4-run lead before Veterans Memorial got on the scoreboard.

Freshman pitcher Scarlett Geurin got the win in the circle, giving up two hits and one run with one strikeout.

Leander can win the series on Friday with a win in Game 2 at Veterans Memorial.
