You can’t keep a good coach down for long.
Lovejoy Independent School District voted unanimously Saturday morning to hire former Westlake head coach Todd Dodge as the next football coach at Lucas Lovejoy High School. Dodge was introduced to the media in a press conference shortly after the vote.
Dodge retired from coaching in 2021 after leading Westlake to its third straight Class 6A state championship. Those three championships are part of seven total for the legendary coach, which includes four titles at Southlake Carroll, located 43 miles west of Lucas in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Dodge’s son Riley has been the head coach at Southlake Carroll since 2018. The father and son coached against each other in the 2020 Class 6A-Division I title game, in which Westlake won 52-34.
Todd Dodge’s coaching career spans over 27 years with stops at Marble Falls, Keller Fossil Ridge and Cameron Yoe, where he started in 1994. He also had a four-year stint as head coach at the University of North Texas. He has a career record of 248-71 as a high school coach.
Dodge, a former University of Texas quarterback, coached at Westlake for eight seasons, leading the Chaps to four state championship game appearances and a 104-13 record.
While head coach of the Chaps, Dodge coached current Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik and current Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Sam Ehlinger.
Lucas Lovejoy is a Class 5A-DIvision II powerhouse and has reached the regional finals (state quarterfinals) in each of the last three seasons.
