GEORGETOWN โ€” Two vastly different matches highlighted Thursdayโ€™s UIL boys soccer state championship slate at Birkelbach Field, with one decided by a single moment of brilliance and the other turning into an overtime showcase.

Waco La Vega edges Lake Dallas for Class 4A Division I title

A tightly contested match needed just one strike, and Waco La Vega emphatically delivered.

Angel Cervantes Calvillo scored the lone goal in the 44th minute, lifting Waco La Vega to a 1-0 win over Lake Dallas in the Class 4A Division I state championship.

Calvillo finished a setup from Dovanny Morales just minutes into the second half, breaking a scoreless deadlock in a match that otherwise saw little separation between the two sides.

Both teams finished with eight total shots, but the Pirates (27-2-0) were more efficient, placing four on target compared to just two for Lake Dallas (11-7-6).

Goalkeeper Alex Zaleta Rubio anchored La Vega’s defensive effort, recording two saves in a clean sheet performance, while the back line held firm against a Lake Dallas side that controlled 52% of possession.

Despite the possession edge and a 6-5 advantage in first-half shots, Lake Dallas couldnโ€™t find the finishing touch, as Waco La Vega capitalized on its best chance to secure the state title.

Bridgeport rallies in overtime thriller for 4A Division II crown

If the early game was about patience, the nightcap was pure chaos.

Bridgeport erased a halftime deficit and exploded in overtime to defeat Royal 5-2 in the Class 4A Division II state championship, which was delayed until 8 p.m. due to weather.

Royal (28-2-1)struck early, with Jerson Perez scoring twice in the first half to give his team a 2-1 lead heading into the break.

But Bridgeportโ€™s attack was relentless all match and eventually broke through.

After Xxavier Garza equalized early in the second half, Jared Contreras took over late. He scored twice in a span of less than two minutes in overtime to flip the match, then Bridgeport added another for insurance.

Contreras finished with a hat trick, while Garza added two goals in a dominant attacking display.

Bridgeport (22-3-0) outshot Royal 22-6 and held a commanding 68% possession.

After conceding twice in the opening half, Bridgeport responded with four unanswered goals across regulation and overtime to claim the state championship in emphatic fashion.
