GEORGETOWN — Perfect met momentum.

In the end, perfection finished the job.

Smithson Valley completed a historic undefeated season, defeating Prosper Walnut Grove girls soccer 1-0 in overtime to win the UIL Class 5A Division I state championship Friday at Birkelbach Field.

The victory secured the program’s first state championship in its first appearance and capped a 29-0 season defined by defense, discipline and resilience.

“It’s pretty sweet,” said Smithson Valley head coach Jason Adkins. “That’s not something we focus on, but I’m just excited and happy.”

A battle of styles and wills

The matchup lived up to its billing.

Smithson Valley (29-0) entered with one of the state’s best defenses, having allowed just nine goals all season. Walnut Grove (23-3-1) arrived riding a nine-match shutout streak, outscoring opponents 43-0 during that stretch.

What followed was a physical, hard-fought contest that saw nine yellow cards and a red card issued in a game played on the edge for all 100 minutes.

“We knew they were a physical team,” Adkins said. “We just fought through those things and found a way to finish it.”

Both teams traded chances throughout regulation, finishing with 10 shots apiece, but neither could break through the other’s defense.

Smithson Valley’s freshman goalkeeper Brianna Lyons made three saves to preserve the shutout, continuing a postseason in which the Rangers allowed just one goal.

The moment that decided it

After 80 minutes of deadlock and a scoreless first overtime, it came down to one play.

At the 84:40 mark, junior Alondra Sanchez found space, broke away and delivered the game-winner – a strike that finally broke Walnut Grove goalkeeper Finley Pike, who blocked everything the Rangers threw at her.

“We knew after that intermission we were going to find a way,” Sanchez said. “No matter what.”

From there, Smithson Valley’s defense did what it has done all season.

Defense defines a champion

The Rangers’ identity never wavered.

They absorbed pressure early, countered when opportunities came and trusted a back line that has been nearly impossible to break.

“We’re defensively minded,” Adkins said. “We want to defend well first, and we’re good on the counter.”

It was the same formula that carried them all season and one that proved enough against one of the state’s most explosive offenses.

Walnut Grove, which entered averaging nearly five goals per game over its last nine matches, was held scoreless for the first time since early in the postseason.

Finishing the journey

For Smithson Valley, this championship was about more than just one match.

It was the culmination of a year-long mission and a response to last season’s semifinal heartbreak.

The Rangers avenged their semifinal loss to A&M Consolidated earlier a week ago on the same field and became the second Central Texas team to defeat a North Texas opponent this year in a state final, joining Wimberley’s win Thursday in the Class 4A Division II final.

“I know how bad we wanted it,” senior captain Addison Briscoe said. “We wanted to give this to our coach.”

When the final whistle sounded, the result was something Smithson Valley had never experienced before.

A perfect season. A title. History.
