GEORGETOWN — The margin between history and heartbreak was as thin as a deflection.

Salado’s championship dream ended in the most cruel and unlikely way Thursday afternoon, as Celina capitalized on a late own goal to secure a 2-1 victory in the UIL Class 4A Division I girls state championship at Birkelbach Stadium.

Backed by an estimated crowd of nearly 1,200 fans that filled the visitors side bleachers, Salado brought a small-town energy to the state’s biggest stage and matched it with its play.

The deciding moment came when the ball ricocheted off a Salado defender and into the Lady Eagles own goal in the 69th minute, which proved to be the decisive moment.

“It doesn’t take anything away from the season they had,” said Salado head coach Michael Goos. “They gave everything they had and I couldn’t be more proud. The fight they showed the entire game… even when we went down, they just kept trying to find a way.”

For Celina (26-1-1), it was more of the same.

The Bobcats claimed their fifth consecutive state championship, continuing one of the most dominant runs in Texas high school soccer history. Midfielder Ryleigh Stifflemire, who scored the equalizer early in the second half after Salado took a 1-0 lead, was named the game’s most valuable player for the second straight year.

For Salado, the result stung, but the Lady Eagles may have signaled a new dynasty is on the horizon.

Defense delivers again

Salado didn’t back down from the moment.

Facing a Celina attack that entered the match averaging multiple goals per game, the Lady Eagles held firm for long stretches, leaning on the same defensive identity that carried them to their first state championship appearance.

Celina outshot Salado 14-3, but many of those chances came under pressure, with freshman goalkeepers Reese Smith and Channing Finch combining for six saves.

Even after Celina found its breakthrough, Salado never unraveled.

Trading blows

Salado struck first early in the second half.

Lucy Johnson finished off a well-worked sequence in the 43rd minute, giving the Lady Eagles a 1-0 lead and putting pressure on a Celina team that had rarely trailed all season.

But champions respond, and Celina did just that.

Stifflemire answered less than eight minutes later, leveling the match and shifting momentum back toward the Bobcats.

From there, the game settled into a tense battle until misfortune arrived.

A cruel bounce

With just over 11 minutes remaining, Celina sent a ball into the box that from the sideline that deflected off Yawn and past goalkeeper Channing Finch — a play that stunned the Salado faithful and ultimately decided the match.

“I told them this doesn’t take anything away from the amazing season they had,” Goos said. “They should be proud.”

The beginning of something bigger

While Celina celebrated the continuation of a dynasty, Salado walked off the field with something else – belief.

The Lady Eagles reached the state championship for the first time in program history with a roster built largely on youth, including eight freshmen, including both goalkeepers who allowed just eight goals all season.

And they’re not going anywhere.

“I think they’ll be in great hands,” said senior Izzy Blancaflor. “They’ve all grown up together… I know they’ll take care of it.”

Salado will graduate just three seniors, returning the core of a team that not only reached the state final, but proved it belongs.

“They’ve matured a ton,” Goos said. “They were kind of thrown into it, and they stepped up.”

As Celina prepares to move up to Class 5A next season, the path in 4A may soon look very different.

And Salado may be the next dynasty next in line.
