Something has to give.

An undefeated season meets one of the most dominant runs in the state as Smithson Valley takes on Prosper Walnut Grove in the UIL Class 5A Division I state championship Friday. Kickoiff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.

Smithson Valley (28-0) enters chasing the program’s first state title, while Walnut Grove (23-2-1) arrives as one of the hottest teams in Texas.

A clash of elite defenses

Both teams have built their identity the same way: by not conceding.

Smithson Valley has allowed just nine goals all season and hasn’t given up more than one in any match, anchored by freshman goalkeeper Brianna Lyons and a young, disciplined back line.

Walnut Grove has been just as suffocating, if not more so lately.

The Wildcats haven’t allowed a goal in their last nine matches, outscoring opponents 43-0 during that stretch. On the season, they’ve surrendered just 12 goals while scoring 142.

It sets up a state final where chances could be limited and finishing will be everything.

“We train on it. We work on it,” Smithson Valley head coach Jason Adkins said of his defense. “Those young girls are stepping up, and I’m so proud of them.”

Tested and ready

If there’s one question surrounding Smithson Valley, it’s how the Rangers will handle a team with Walnut Grove’s firepower.

The Wildcats defeated A&M Consolidated – the same team Smithson Valley beat 2-0 in the semifinals – by a 5-1 margin earlier this season.

But the Rangers believe their path has prepared them.

In the semifinal, Smithson Valley absorbed heavy pressure early before taking control, a performance that reinforced their ability to adapt.

“Soccer is one of those sports where you can not play well sometimes and still end up winning the game,” Adkins said. “Last year we were on the front foot and didn’t win. This year we did.”

Motivation that hasn’t faded

This run has been fueled by unfinished business.

After last year’s semifinal loss to A&M Consolidated in a penalty shootout, the Rangers made it a point to get back and finish.

“Last year was heartbreaking,” senior captain Addison Briscoe said. “We wanted to face them again … and to be able to bounce back and prove ourselves, it makes it that much better.”

Now, the opportunity is even bigger.

One more step

For Smithson Valley, the formula has been consistent all season: defend, stay composed and capitalize on key moments.

For Walnut Grove, it’s been overwhelming opponents with a relentless attack while maintaining defensive discipline.

Something has to give.

“I know how bad I want it,” Briscoe said. “And I know this team wants it just as bad.”

Keys to the match

1. Handle the pressure early

Prosper Walnut Grove girls soccer is going to come out aggressive — they’ve outscored teams 43-0 in their last nine matches. Smithson Valley has to survive that first wave, just like it did in the semifinal.

2. Stay organized defensively

Smithson Valley Rangers girls soccer hasn’t allowed more than one goal all season. If the Rangers stay compact and disciplined, they’ll keep themselves in position to win late.

3. Win the moments

This game likely won’t have many chances. Set pieces, counters, and one or two key finishes could decide everything.

4. Trust the back line (and Lyons)

Lyons has been elite all season. If she plays like she did in the semifinal, Smithson Valley has a real edge.

What to Watch

Walnut Grove’s offense makes it the more explosive team and may be considered the favorite, but Smithson Valley has been perfect for a reason.

The Rangers defend at an elite level, don’t panic under pressure and have shown they can win tight matches.

If this game stays close into the second half, it plays directly into Smithson Valley’s identity.

What to watch:

  • First 15 minutes (tempo + pressure)
  • Smithson Valley’s defensive shape
  • Whether Walnut Grove’s attack can break through

Prediction

Smithson Valley 2, Prosper Walnut Grove 1 (If it’s tight late, the Rangers’ defense gives them the edge to finish the job.)
