One program is chasing history. The other has been defining it.
Thursday’s Class 4A Division I state championship will feature a true David (Salado) and Goliath (Celina) storyline.
The Bobcats are four-time defending state champions, while the young Lady Eagles – a team that features eight freshmen on its roster – are newcomers to the state’s biggest stage and the true definition of an underdog.
Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown.
Salado (27-1) arrives in the title game for the first time in program history after years of near-misses, finally breaking through with a 2-1 win over Davenport in the state semifinals.
Now, the question is simple: Can Salado finish the climb or will Celina add another chapter to its dynasty?
“We’ll prepare the same way we always do,” Salado head coach Michael Goos said. “Play good defensively, find our chances and be ready for the biggest stage.”
That formula has carried the Lady Eagles all season.
Dominance defined

If Salado is chasing history, Celina has been writing it.
The Bobcats (25-1-1) have won four consecutive state championships and are making their fifth consecutive straight appearance in a state championship match. The last team to defeat Celina in a state championship match was Midlothian Heritage in 2021.
Since then, the Bobcats have turned sustained excellence into expectation.
They enter the final riding a 21-match winning streak, outscoring opponents by an average of five goals per match during that stretch. On the season, Celina has allowed just 11 goals – a defensive mark that mirrors Salado’s own identity.
And their resume holds up across classifications.
Celina’s only loss came against Frisco Wakeland, a Class 5A Division II state semifinalist, while the Bobcats also played to a draw against 4A Division II state finalist Wimberley.
Now, they’ll take one final shot at a 4A title before moving up to Class 5A next season.
Youth that doesn’t play young

Salado’s run has been fueled by a roster that, on paper, shouldn’t be here yet.
The Lady Eagles feature eight freshmen, including goalkeepers Reese Smith and Channing Finch, who have split time all season while anchoring one of the stingiest defenses in the state.
They’ve allowed just six goals in 28 games.
And in the biggest moment yet, it was another freshman who delivered.
Paige Stock’s late goal in the semifinal lifted Salado into the state title game – a moment that reflected the team’s fearless identity.
“I knew I had to finish for the seniors,” Stock said after the game. “To keep their season going.”
Goos said the youth has been an asset, not a liability.
“They don’t get rattled,” he said. “They just keep helping us make history.”
Defense vs. dominance
If Salado is going to dethrone Celina, it will likely come down to its defense.
The Lady Eagles’ back line has consistently controlled matches, while their freshman goalkeepers have delivered in key moments.
That discipline will be tested against a Celina team that knows how to win on this stage.
For Salado, the challenge isn’t just talent. It’s about overcoming the pressure of being there for the first time.
Finishing the story

For players like junior Avery Hibner, who experienced last year’s semifinal heartbreak, this moment carries extra weight.
“Some of us have been playing together since we were little, like six years old,” Hibner said. “So to have this moment together, after all the work we’ve put in, it means everything.”
Now, one match remains.
A program that has never been here versus one that rarely leaves.
A breakthrough versus a dynasty.

Keys to the match
1. Can Salado slow Celina early?
Celina thrives on momentum. If Salado can control tempo and keep the match tight early, it plays directly into its defensive strength.
2. Finish the chances
Salado won’t get many looks. When they do – like Stock’s semifinal goal – they have to capitalize.
3. Stay composed in the moment
This is new territory for Salado. Celina has been here five straight years. Keeping composure and not letting the nerves from playing in a state championship will be as important as handling the ball.

What to watch
Celina’s experience makes it the favorite, and for good reason. Four straight titles don’t happen by accident.
But don’t let Salado’s youth fool you. The Lady Eagles are dangerous. If anyone is capable of slaying the giant, it’s Salado.
The Lady Eagles defend at an elite level, don’t panic under pressure and have shown they can deliver in late moments.
If this game stays close into the second half, Salado has a real shot to pull the upset.
What to watch:
- First 15 minutes (tempo + nerves)
- Salado’s defensive shape under pressure
- Whether a freshman steps up again
Prediction: Celina 2, Salado 1 (But don’t be surprised if Salado pulls off the upset.)
