MUMFORD – Westlake is heading back to the UIL state championship game.

Behind a scorching shooting performance from Mack Martin and another steady effort from Texas signee Bo Ogden, the Chaparrals defeated Cypress Falls 59-27 Tuesday in the UIL Class 6A Division II state semifinal at Mumford High School.

The victory sends Westlake (32-6) to its first state championship game since 2021 and making its fourth appearance in the state tournament.

Martin sparked the decisive stretch early in the second half. The senior drained three consecutive 3-pointers and scored 13 of his game-high 23 points in the third quarter as the Chaparrals turned a comfortable halftime lead into a runaway.

His nine straight points to open the half pushed Westlake’s advantage to 39-14 and effectively ended any comeback hopes for Cy Falls.

Westlake’s defense was equally dominant.

The Chaparrals limited Cy Falls (30-6) to just 16 points in the first half and held the Eagles to only three points in the fourth quarter. By the end of the third period, Westlake had stretched the lead to 48-24 and led by as many as 28 points late in the quarter.

Head coach Robert Lucero credited his team’s defensive discipline and ball movement for the lopsided result.

“We had to guard their stuff, find their shooters and rebound,” Lucero said. “If you can do that, then you have a chance on the other side. I thought we did a good job of moving the ball and getting really good shots.”

Ogden helped set the tone early, scoring 11 of his 16 points in the first half as Westlake built a 29-16 lead at the break.

From there, Martin took over.

“Mac is an elite shooter,” Lucero said. “He really got going, and then the guys started to find him. That shows the maturity of this group, nobody’s playing for points, they’re playing to win.”

Martin said the performance was the result of countless hours of work.

“I put hours and hours of work in,” Martin said. “All those hours in the dark, it’s paying off right here.”

Westlake will now face No. 1 Little Elm in the Class 6A Division II state championship game at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

The matchup presents another challenge for the Chaparrals, who are 0-3 against Dallas-area teams in state tournament games.

Still, Martin said the opportunity to play for a championship is something the team has been working toward all season.

“Not many people get this opportunity,” Martin said. “It’s always been a dream. Hopefully we can go bring it home.”
