LOVB Houston extended its win streak to five matches Wednesday night, defeating LOVB Nebraska in straight sets, 25-21, 25-17, 25-14.
Houston (5-?) overcame an early deficit in the opening set before taking control midway through and never relinquishing momentum.
Nebraska led 8-5 early and remained in front through the first half of the set before Houston surged ahead behind the offensive production of Jess Mruzik and Jordan Thompson. Houston closed the set on a decisive run to secure the 25-21 win.
The second set belonged to Houston from the outset. The home team built separation early and maintained control behind efficient attacking and balanced scoring. Thompson delivered key kills late in the frame, helping Houston cruise to a 25-17 victory and take a commanding two-set lead.
Houston dominated the third set, building a large advantage early and never allowing Nebraska to mount a comeback. Thompson continued to lead the offense, while Houston’s defensive pressure limited Nebraska’s scoring opportunities. Houston closed out the sweep with a 25-14 win to secure its fifth straight victory.
Thompson led all players with 18 kills on 33 attacks and added seven digs. Mruzik finished with 14 kills, one ace, two blocks and four digs, while Madi Rishel contributed eight kills and Amber Igiede added seven kills on an efficient .700 hitting percentage. As a team, Houston recorded 52 kills and hit .530, compared to Nebraska’s 36 kills and .360 attack percentage.
Kimberly Drewniok paced Nebraska with 14 kills, while Jordan Larson added six kills and Jaali Winters had four kills.
Houston’s offense and defensive efficiency proved decisive, as it outscored Nebraska by 20 points overall and controlled each set after gaining momentum in the opener. The victory continues Houston’s strong stretch heading into the LOVB Classic in Kansas City, where it will face LOVB Madison on Sunday.
