From staff reports

LOVB Houston opened the season in front of a sellout crowd, but LOVB Salt Lake spoiled the opener with a sweep, 27-25, 25-19, 25-20, Thursday at the Berry Center in Cypress.
Salt Lake set the tone early with a commanding first set.
Houston extended rallies to keep Salt Lake from establishing early separation. A late push by the home side erased a deficit and forced a 23-23 tie, but Salt Lake executed cleanly in the final points to steal the set, 27-25.
From there, Salt Lake found its rhythm.
Houston struggled to convert in transition while Salt Lake’s efficiency at the net and in first-ball offense began to show. The visitors controlled the middle portions of both the second and third sets, limiting Houston’s runs and closing out the match in 87 minutes.
Opposite hitter Jordan Thompson paced Houston with 17 kills to go with two blocks and two digs, accounting for more than a third of the team’s total kills
Jess Mruzik and Madi Rishel added seven points apiece, with Rishel anchoring the back row with 12 digs.
The night also marked a milestone moment for Houston. Rookie opposite Logan Lednicky, who won a national championship with Texas A&M weeks ago, made her professional debut in the first set. Lednicky made an immediate impact, recording a block on the first point of her pro career and helping spark Houston’s late rally.
Following her first match as head coach, Sanja Tomašević pointed to details as the difference.
“We just need to clean up the little things,” Tomašević said. “There were a few easy plays on our side that would have given us a chance to attack, and we weren’t able to do that.”
Houston will have little time to dwell on the opener, hitting the road to face LOVB Nebraska, who lost to Austin Wednesday. The match is set for 3 p.m., Saturday and can be streamed on ESPN+.
