UTSA and Temple meet Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in what will be a pivotal conference opener for both programs. Each enters the matchup at 2-2, both fresh off a bye week, with momentum and urgency colliding in their first American Conference game of the season.
Players to watch
For UTSA, the spotlight shines brightest on Robert Henry Jr., the senior running back who has become one of the nationโs most explosive playmakers. Henry leads the FBS in rushing yards per game (156.0), yards per carry (9.18), and all-purpose yards (180.0). His streak of six straight 100-yard games has made him the centerpiece of UTSAโs offense. Quarterback Owen McCown has complemented him with 756 passing yards and seven touchdowns through four games. Tight end Houston Thomas also remains a reliable target
Temple counters with balance on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Evan Simon has thrown 10 touchdowns without an interception while completing 57 percent of his passes. His chemistry with wide receiver JoJo Bermudez, who leads the Owls with 184 yards and two scores, will be key. Running back Jay Ducker provides physicality in the ground game, while linebacker Jalen Stewart and defensive end CamโRon Stewart headline a defense that has produced 6.5 tackles for loss and four sacks from CamโRon alone.
Keys to victory
UTSA: The Roadrunners must lean on Henry early and often, forcing Templeโs defense to commit extra bodies to the box. That should open passing lanes for McCown, who has proven capable of spreading the ball around. Defensively, containing Simon and preventing explosive plays downfield will be critical. UTSAโs pass defense has been vulnerable, allowing nearly 290 yards per game.
Temple: The Owls need to establish balance, using Ducker to keep UTSAโs front honest while letting Simon find Bermudez in space. Defensively, winning first down and slowing Henryโs big-play ability is non-negotiable. Temple has thrived on turnovers, ranking among the top 10 nationally in turnover margin, and flipping possession will be vital.
Robert Henry in Heisman conversations
Henryโs electric start has placed him firmly in the national conversation. Already on the Doak Walker and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award watch lists, Henry was added to the Maxwell Award Watch List this week, cementing his status as one of college footballโs premier players. With his nation-leading numbers and highlight runs of 70-plus yards, Henryโs name has begun to surface in early Heisman chatter. A strong showing in conference play will only amplify that momentum.
American Conference outlook
Saturday also marks the start of the American Conference slate for both UTSA and Temple. The Roadrunners are 8-5 all-time in conference openers and 4-1 under Traylor. Temple, meanwhile, has been a middle-of-the-pack program since joining the league, splitting their last 12 conference openers. With Memphis, Tulane, and Navy all off to hot starts, every early win will matter in chasing Decemberโs title game. For both squads, this opener feels like a swing game that could define their seasonโs trajectory.
Traylorโs name in Arkansas chatter

Even as UTSA tries to find rhythm, head coach Jeff Traylor remains a figure in national headlines. Traylorโs name has surfaced again in connection with the Arkansas coaching job, as speculation continues around the Razorbacksโ future. While Traylor has repeatedly emphasized his commitment to the Roadrunners, outside noise will linger as long as he continues to win and elevate UTSAโs profile. How his team handles that distraction could be telling as conference play begins.
Roadrunners bring high-scoring attack
UTSA has become one of the highest-scoring programs in the FBS during the Traylor era. The Roadrunners are averaging more than 33 points per game over his five-plus seasons and have topped 40 points six times in their last 10 contests. With Henry breaking long runs and McCown spreading the ball to multiple weapons, UTSAโs offense is built for explosive drives. Templeโs defense, which has struggled against big plays, will be tested from the opening snap.
Prediction
This matchup features two evenly matched programs, but UTSAโs proven ability to finish tight games under Jeff Traylor could tilt the outcome. Henry has been unstoppable, and while Templeโs defense is improved, the Owls havenโt faced a back of his caliber yet. Expect UTSA to grind out another close one.
Prediction: UTSA 42, Temple 27.
