The ASJ selects a small school player of the year, top newcomer (Rising Star), goalkeeper of the year and coach of the year, as well naming our Mr. Austin Soccer – given to the player of the year.
When selecting teams and awards, we select players from within our 82-school coverage area that reaches across 13 counties in the Austin-San Antonio metroplex. The ASJ considers nominations from coaches, overall team performance, individual statistics and other postseason awards when selecting teams and award winners.

2025 Mr. Austin Soccer: J Mossholder, Vista Ridge

J Mossholder and the Vista Ridge Rangers were inches away from reaching the Class 6A Division I state championship game.
Despite a 1-0 loss to Alief Elsik, there was still history made. The Rangers reached the state semifinals for the first time in 17 years.
Mossholder was a big part of that success, as the senior led the Rangers in nearly every offensive category. He finished with an Austin-area best 81 points with 38 goals and five assists. He also led all of Class 6A in goals scored, according to MaxPreps.
The postseason accolades came pouring in. He was an honorable mention to the Texas Association of Soccer Coaches (TASCO) Class 6A all-state team. He was selected as the District 25-6A most valuable player and awarded the golden boot.
He’ll play soccer in in Spain’s FFCV Regional League for ETure FC next year.
Reader’s poll: The Austin Sports Journal polled readers and asked their choice for player of the year. Liberty Hill’s Angel Cardenas won the reader vote in a close race with 38.8% of the 2,700 votes cast. Vista Ridge’s J Mossholder was second with 31.5% of the vote, while Andrew Roldan of Lake Travie received 26.1%.
Other’s considered: Lake Travis’ Andrew Roldan; Vandegrift’s James Hehman; Austin Achieve’s Fredy Lozano; Liberty Hill’s Angel Cardenas
Small school player of the year
Fredy Lozano, Austin Achieve

Lozano led the Polar Bears in points with 57, which include 22 goals and 13 assists. The senior played every position on the field and helped lifted Austin Achieve to the school’s first state title in any sport by scoring the only goal in the Class 4A Division II championship against Gainesville. He was named the game’s most valuable player.
Other’s considered: Salado’s Damontè Foster
Goalkeeper of the year
Angel Cardenas, Liberty Hill junior

The junior goalkeeper was a big reason the Panthers’ went on an improbable run to the Class 5A Division II state championship game. Cardenas had 17 clean sheets this season, including three in the playoffs. He was a TASCO first team all-state and UILL all-state tournament selection, as well as being an All-District 25-5A honoree.
Other’s considered: Bowie’s Liam Kalutkiewicz; Westwood’s Zach Shaddock and Austin Achieve’s Victor Escobar
Rising star (newcomer of the year)
Mortiz Romark, Cedar Park sophomore
The Timberwolves were one of the surprise teams in 2025, finishing second in District 25-5A behind Glenn with a 9-2-3 district record. Part of their success was a group of underclassmen led by Remark, who led the team with 33 points (13 goals and 7 assists).
Coach of the year
Greta Kwedar, Austin Achieve

Austin Achieve soccer made history this year in many ways, but one piece of history in particular would be difficult to ignore. Kwedar, the Polar Bears’ longtime coach, became the first woman to ever coach a boys team to a UIL soccer state championship. It was also Austin Achieve’s first state championship in any sport.
Other’s considered: Vista Ridge’s Philip Reus; Liberty Hill’s Stefano Salerno; Vandegrift’s Jonathan Winship
