The University Interscholastic League announced Monday Dr. Jamey Harrison will be the next executive director of the UIL.  His appointment will take effect on April 1, as longtime UIL executive director Dr. Charles Breithaupt will retire on Aug. 31. “I am deeply honored to step into this role and continue serving Texas students and schools through the UIL,” Harrison said in a statement. “The opportunities UIL provides go beyond competition— they shape character, unite communities and create lifelong memories. I look forward to building on this legacy while preserving what makes UIL great.” Harrison has been the deputy executive director of the UIL since 2011. In his role, Harrison has overseen all UIL departments, led governmental relations efforts and supervised rulemaking and adjudication processes. He will become the eighth executive director in UIL history. During his tenure at UIL, Harrison has spearheaded several major initiatives. He has overseen significant improvements to competitive equity, including the addition of a sixth conference and the recent implementation of Division I and Division II playoff brackets for all team sports. He has also played a pivotal role in advancing technology and mapping software to improve the reclassification and realignment alignment process. Additionally, Harrison has led UIL’s crisis response efforts to major weather events and, most notably, the organization’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Before joining UIL, Harrison was the Bridge City ISD superintendent. His career in education includes experience as a teacher, coach, assistant principal, high school principal and deputy superintendent. A graduate of Hardin-Jefferson High School, Harrison earned both his undergraduate and Master of Education degrees from Lamar University before completing his doctoral degree at The University of Texas.
