Here are the Austin Sports Journal’s big and small school football games of the week for Week 1

From staff reports

The Texas high school football season is 10 days away.

Each week throughout the season, the Austin Sports Journal will select a Big School (6A-5A) and Small School (4A-below) Game of the Week. Games will be revealed on Mondays of each week and coverage will be provided for both games.

The excitement for the season is nearing peak levels, so we decided to reveal our Week 1 games of the week early.

Week 1 is full of great games, but there are a couple that are must-see! You can find the complete Week 1 schedule here.

Here are our Big School and Small School Games of the Week for Week 1:

Two of the best rivalries in the Greater Austin Area will take place on the first week of the season.

The Taco Shack Bowl at House Park should be on every fan’s high school football bucket list. The Friday night lights with the Austin skyline as a backdrop sets the tone for this great rivalry.

On Friday, we head to eastern Williamson County for the annual Battle of 79 between Thorndale and Thrall. The game will take place at Thrall’s Tiger Field this year, and from what we’re told, it will be a standing-room only crowd and a true Friday night lights experience.

Here are five more to watch:

  • Weiss at McNeil, 7 p.m., Thursday at Kelly Reeves Stadium
  • Dripping Springs at Vandegrift, 7 p.m., Friday at Monroe Stadium
  • Westlake vs. Prosper, 7:30 p.m., Thursday at Crusader Stadium, Belton
  • Granger at Johnson City, 7 p.m., Friday at Eagle Stadium, Johnson City
  • Liberty Hill at Cibolo Steele, 7:30 p.m., Friday at Lehnhoff Stadium, Schertz
