The Weatherford College-bound pitcher got 48% of the vote in tight race

The Austin Sports Journal asked readers last week who their choice was for the 2024 Mr. Austin Baseball award, given to the top overall baseball player in the Austin area.
Of the five finalists chosen for the award, which included players from Thorndale, Vista Ridge, Dripping Springs and Cedar Park, Rouse senior Oscar Salazar was the readers top choice with 1,463 votes.
Salazar is one of five finalists for the honor of being named Mr. Austin Baseball as part of the ASJ’s inaugural All-Austin Metro Baseball Team. The full all-area team will be announced on Thursday, June 27.
Other finalists include Cedar Park senior Kade Davis, Navy-signee Andrew Wood of Vista Ridge and Taylor Tracey of Dripping Springs.
There were more than 3,000 votes were cast in our reader poll and Salazar won a tight race against Thorndale pitcher Gunner Ferguson, who received 1,269 voters. Wood came in third with 162 votes.
Here are the final results:
- Oscar Salazar, Rouse pitcher/first baseman – 1,463 (48.4%)
- Gunner Ferguson, Thorndale pitcher/shortstop – 1,269 (41.9%)
- Andre Wood, Vista Ridge pitcher/first baseman – 162 (5.4%)
- Kade Davis, Cedar Park pitcher/outfielder – 93 (3.1%)
- Taylor Tracey, Dripping Springs outfielder/pitcher – 39 (1.3%)
