Anderson’s Ed Small & Weiss’ Jax Brown picked for first cover of 2024 football preview publication

The Austin Sports Journal on Friday revealed the cover for its first edition of its annual football preview premium publication – featuring Anderson wide receiver Ed Small and Weiss quarterback Jax Brown.
Redistricting shifted the balance in Austin high school football, moving Anderson and Weiss to Class 5A. Small and Brown appear on the cover with Austin icon Stevie Ray Vaughn with the headline “Power Moves.”
The cover story will look at how redistricting will create new opportunities for several Austin-area high school football teams.
Cover photography was done by Austin-based photographer Jerry Saulman.
“This issue is very personal to me,” said Austin Sports Journal publisher Michael Adams. “I went back to my roots when imagining the cover. The location the photo was taken is a tribute to my early beginnings as a sports journalist in Austin, with a splash of the future. Redistricting revamped Austin high school football, much like how the tech industry changed this city. I tried to illustrate this with the cover.”
The 48-page all-color magazine is the first of its kind in Austin, covering all 60 high school football teams across the Greater Austin Metropolitan Area, including teams in Travis, Williamson, Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet and Hays counties, along with Giddings and La Grange.
