Meet the 2024 All-Austin Metro boys track and field teams and award winners

Below is the 2024 Austin Sports Journal’s All-Austin Metro boys track and field award winners and teams.  

The All-Austin Metro track and field teams were selected by classification, with a combined team for Class 4A and below. Each team consists of two sprinters, two relay teams, two mid-distance/distance runners, two hurdlers and five field event athletes. 

Awards were selected regardless of classification.  

Mr. Austin Track and Field

Joseph Wienen, Georgetown senior  

In his final high school track and field meet, Georgetown’s Joseph Wienen walked out of the UIL state track meet as a medalist – twice.  

In cold, rainy conditions on the morning May 3, Wienen passed Adam Burlison on the final lap in the Class 5A boys 3,200-meter run to win gold in under nine minutes. He was a bronze medalist in his junior year.  

Later that day, in the final individual event of the day, the senior distance runner took home bronze in the 1,600 after finishing the first 400 meters in last place. As a junior, Wienen qualified for the event t the stat emeet and finished seventh.  

It was a cap on a great running career with the Georgetown track and field and cross country teams. This past fall, Wienen was a top 10 individual finisher at the state cross country meet in Round Rock, helping the Eagles to a second-place finish as a team.

Rising Star Award

Joseph West III, Stony Point sophomore  

The UIL state meet hasn’t heard the last of Joseph West III. The Stony point sophomore qualified to compete in his first state championships in three events – two individual and one relay.  

West was the regional champion in the long jump and a regional silver medalist in the 110 hurdles and as part of the Tigers’ 4×200 meter relay team.  

He barely missed the medal stand in the 6A boys long jump, finishing fourth with a leap of 23 feet, 7.75 inches. He also finished fourth in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing 17-hundredths of a second behind Coppell’s Aiden McFarlane.  

The relay team finished ninth at the state meet in a competitive field at the state meet.

Editor’s note: Unlike other All-Austin Metro teams where players are only eligible if it is their first varsity season, the Rising Star Award for track and field goes to a freshman and sophomore athletes making their first appearance at the UIL state meet.

Class 6A  

Relays

Bowie 4×100 (relay members: Matthew Martinez, Owen Langdon, Griffin Crawley and Julian Whitby): State qualifier in a competitive Clas 6A field and regional silver medalists.  

(tie) Lake Travis 4×400 (relay members: Austin Schillinger, Noah Wood, Kai Tiantawach and Tyler Honeyman): State qualifier and regional silver medalists; placed fifth at state meet.  

(tie) Round Rock 4×400 (relay members: Zach Evans, Jonathan Ferrell, Jeremy Evans and Mason Page): State qualifier and regional gold medalists; placed sixth at state meet.  

Sprinters 

Mason Page, Round Rock senior: State qualifier that missed out on reaching the medal stand in the 400-meter dash by one one-hundredth of a second, was a regional silver medalist.  

Elijah Clark, Westlake junior: Regional bronze medalist and state alternate in the 100 and was a member of all three Chaparral relay teams.  

Mid-distance, distance

Noah Wood, Lake Travis senior: State and regional bronze medalist in the 800, was a wild card entrant in the event at the state meet.  

Luke Bone, Austin High junior: Regional gold medalist and state qualifier in the 800. He finished fifth at the state meet.  

Hurdles 

Ronzell Woods, Manor junior: Regional bronze medalist in the 300 hurdles and regional finalist in both 110 hurdles. Was a state alternate in the 300.  

Owen Langdon, Bowie junior: State qualifier and regional silver medalist in the 300 hurdles and a regional qualifier in the 110.  

Field events

Ethan Saenz, Buda Johnson senior: A state meet wild card entrant in the pole vault and won a bronze medal. He was also a regional bronze medalist in the pole vault.   

Xavier Drumgoole, Round Rock senior: A two-time state gold medalist in the triple jump, winning the 2024 event at the state meet. He was also a regional qualifier in the 100 and 200.

Jacob Henry, Vandegrift senior: A state qualifier and regional silver medalist in the shot put. Is going to the University of Oklahoma for wrestling.  

Oliver Lindsey, Westwood senior: A state qualifier and regional silver medalist in the high jump.  

Jeremiah Robinson, Del Valle senior: A regional qualifier in the discus where he finished fourth.  

Class 5A 

Relays 

Leander 4×100 (relay members: Zane Wooldridge, Jared Ramos, Erik Carmona and Jacob Harris): State alternate and regional bronze medalist.  

LBJ 4×200 (relay members: Antione Baker, Yaheim Riley, Ali Scott and KJ Houston): Regional qualifier, placing fourth at the regional championships.  

Sprinters 

Amir Thompson, Hendrickson senior: State qualifier and regional semifinalist in both the 100 and 200. 

Timothy Mata, Lehman sophomore: Regional finalist in the 100 and 200, placing fifth in the 100 and fourth in the 200.  

Mid-distance, distance

Nolan House, Georgetown senior: State bronze medalist in the 3,200 and alternate in teh 1,600; won silver in the 3,200 and bronze in the 1,600 at the regional meet.  

Edwin Roitch, Rouse senior: State qualifier in the 1,600 and 3,200 and won a silver medal in the 1,600 and gold in the 3,200 at the regional meet.  

Hurdles 

Jaxon Plunkett, Cedar Park senior: A state qualifier in the 300 hurdles, an event he won a silver medal in at the regional meet; was also a regional qualifier in the 100 hurdles.  

Landon Bradley, Connally junior: A regional bronze medalist and state alternate in the 300 and regional qualifier in the 100.

Ramonz Adams, Bastrop junior: Won a silver medal in the triple jump at the state meet and at regionals, was a regional qualifier in the long jump.  

DJ Seaborn, Liberty Hill sophomore: A state qualifier in the triple jump and a regional silver medalist in the event.  

Daniel Mirzai, Georgetown senior: A state qualifier in the pole vault, an event he won a silver medal in at the regional meet.  

Caden O’Hara, Rouse junior: A state qualifier and a regional silver medalist in the pole vault.  

Travon Williams, Liberty Hill senior: A state qualifier and regional silver medalist i the high jump; also, a regional qualifier in the long jump and triple jump.  

Class 4A & below 

Relays 

Thorndale 4×100 (relay members: Jayden Clawson, Everton White, Owen Pyeatt and Carson McCoy): State qualifiers and regional champions in the event.  

La Grange 4×400 (relay members: names not available): Was a regional finalist, placing fourth in the event.  

Sprinters

Carson McCoy, Thorndale senior: Gold medalist in the 100 and silver medalist in the 200 at the state meet; regional champion in both events.  

Austen Diggs, La Grange senior: Silver medalist in the 100 and 200 at the state meet; regional champion in the 200 and regional silver medalist in the 100. 

Mid-distance, distance  

Victor Aviles, Burnet junior: State qualifier and regional champion in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. Only ran in the 800 at the state meet due to illness.  

Tyler Hamblin, Marble Falls junior: Regional bronze medalist in the 3,200 and qualifier in the 1,600, where he finished fourth.  

Hurdles

Swayde Griffin, Lago Vista junior: Gold medalist in the 110 hurdles at the state meet, state qualifier in the 200; was regional gold medalist in 110 hurdles, silver medalist in the 200 and bronze medalist in the high jump.  

Caleb Small, Gateway senior:  A state alternate and regional bronze medalist in the 300 hurdles

Grant Jones, Burnet senior: State qualifier and regional silver medalist in the long jump.  

Reggie Johnson, Blanco senior: State bronze medalist in the discus and state qualifier in the shot put; was regional silver medalist in both events.  

Brady Rygaard, Burnet senior: State silver medalist and regional bronze medalist in the pole vault.  

Brayden Hill, Burnet senior: State qualifier and regional champion in the pole vault.
