Like many athletes starting the 2024 Texas high school track and field postseason this week, the Westwood girls 4×100 meter relay team has their eyes on state gold.
The road to the UIL State Track and Field Championships in May begins this week as districts meets get underway all over the Greater Austin Metro Area.
The relay team of Addy Sanderville, Violet Hewitt, Vivian Garcia and Kenzie McElroy put on a show Saturday on the final day at the 96th annual Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium, the site of the UIL state track meet.
The Warriors relay team took home fourth place in division II with a time of 47.61 seconds in a field of 43 teams from all over the United States.
They shed almost four-tenths of a second off their preliminary time, which was the fourth fastest among all 12 heats.
In the finals, Sanderville, Hewett, Garcia and McElroy still finished as the fastest Class 6A team in the field and behind Long Beach Poly (Calif.), Scotlandville (La.) and Frisco Heritage (5A).
Heritage did finish behind the Warriors in the preliminaries, while the team with the third fastest preliminary time, Bryan Rudder, did not run in the finals.
The road back to Meyers stadium may not be easy for Westwood.
Their finals time would have placed them at 9th in last year’s UIL state meet. Several teams that medaled in 2023 did not run at the Texas Relays, including last year’s state champion Klein Forest. The Golden Eagles have the fastest 4×100 meter relay time in among Class 6A at 45.06.
