Wimberley falls in a slugfest with Navasota in area playoff (video)

SMITHVILLE – The Wimberley Lady Texans fought from all angles Thursday night against a physical Navasota team.

They had to fight from behind, for their season, for rebounds and for points.

The Lady Texans and even had to brush off a few controversial calls, including a questionable first-half buzzer beater that was ruled good to send the Navasota Lady Rattlers into the locker room with a 29-22 halftime lead.

In the end, Navasota (32-3) withstood some late punches by Wimberley to pick up a 50-46 decision in a Class 4A-Region IV area playoff at Smithville High School.

Led by senior Raygan Pack’s team-high 10 points, the Lady Texans (23-16) came out with a few rapid punches from the opening tipoff. Pack and junior Campbell Woodward each scored three points in the first quarter as Wimberley never trailed en route to a 11-10 lead going into the second frame.

Things got a little more physical in the second quarter.

Navasota senior guard Bryanna Stokes scored eight of her game-hgih 29 points in the quarter to help the Lady Rattlers overtake the lead. Five different Navasota players scored in the second quarter, but none of them were heard from again.

Stokes scored all but six of the Lady Rattlers 21 second-half points.

Meanwhile, Wimberley clawed back into in the third quarter and cut Navasota’s lead to five heading into the final fram.

Senior Baylee Gold scored all seven of her points in the second half, including four that helped the Lady Texans tie the game lade in the fourth quarter.

However, the Lady Rattlers delivered the final blow from a pair of free-throws from Stokes with two seconds left to knockout Wimberley’s hopes to reach the regional quarterfinals.

The Lady Texans will only lose one starter from this years team in Gold, along with Pack and Rylee Jackson. Wimberley finished third in District 27-4A.
