PFLUGERVILLE โ Hendricksonโs girls basketball team had an angel watching over them Friday night.
After a frustrating first half, Hendrickson overcame adversity and defeated visiting Georgetown 43-30 to claim the Lady Hawksโ second straight District 23-5A championship.
It was the perfect honor for their late teammate Tatyanna Bailey, who died in August from brain cancer.
Once head coach Norma Sierra and all of the players took their turn cutting strans of the net, assistant coach and Tatyannaโs mother, Latraica Spencer-Bailey cut down what was left of the net.
Hendrickson (25-7, 13-0) was led by Niya Watersโs game-high 17 points, while Amya Edwards added 13.
Georgetown (25-6, 11-2) didnโt do away quietly.
Forwards Cassidy and Chasidy Lee shut down Hendricksonโs ability to drive to the basketball while guards Reese Hoadley and Bella Dabbs forced multiple turnovers.
Meanwhile, Brynn Bauer, Hoadley and Caroline Rutledge heated up from behind the three-point line as the Lady Eagles took a 17-11 lead after the first quarter.
However, Hendrickson flipped the script in the second quarter.
After trailing 22-13 midway through the frame, Hendrickson closed the half on a 7-2 run and cut Georgetownโs lead to four points at halftime.
Hendrickson outscored Georgetown 20-6 in the second half to put a stamp on the Lady Hawksโ district championship.
