Newcomers join the Class 6A and 5A area girls rankings, No 1 teams stay same

Here are On the Sidelines’ Sports top five high school girls basketball teams in Class 6A, Class 5A and Class 4A-below in the Greater Austin Metro Area.

Class 6A

Class 6A notes

Westlake remains the top team in the Austin metro area Class 6A power rankings. Gianna Angiolet averaged 23 points per game last week, scoring 19 and 27 points in wins over Anderson and Dripping Springs, respectively… Vista Ridge moves up into the No. 2 spot. The Lady Rangers hold a one-game lead over Vandegrift, the No 5 team in our poll, in the District 25-6A championship race. The Lady Vipers lost to red-hot Stony Point on Tuesday… Speaking of Stony Point, The Lady Tigers knocked off Round Rock on Friday to stay alive in the playoff race. The Lady Dragons hold a two-game lead over Stony Point with three games left to play… Bowie jumps to No. 3 and has a showdown with visiting Westlake on Friday in a game that will likely determine the District 26-6A championship… Lake Travis quietly gets into the rankings for the first time since Dec. 4. The Lady Cavs are in third place in District 26-6A and had wins over Del Valle and Anderson last week.

Class 5A notes

The Class 5A power rankings picked up a new member this week in Navarro. The Lady Vikings take over the No. 5 spot and are in second place in 24-5A. Navarro clinched a playoff spot last week with a win over LBJ and is a game behind McCallum after the Lady Knights lost to Austin LASA last week. … That’s the only change in our 5A poll as Glenn, Liberty Hill, Hendrickson and Georgetown maintain their hold on the No. 1 through No. 4 spots, respectively. … Glenn and Liberty Hill are on a collision course for their rematch at Glenn on Feb. 6. But both have tough matchups this week. The Lady Grizzlies will take on a Cedar Park team that beat them in the first round of District 25-5A play, while Liberty Hill will face a tough Hays team on Friday. … Hendrickson and Georgetown are set for their rematch on Friday at Hendrickson. The Lady Hawks have won nine-straight games, which includes the Jan. 9 victory over the Lady Eagles.

Class 4A-1A notes

Taylor keeps the No. 1 spot and can wrap up the District 22-4A championship with a win Tuesday at home against Giddings. The Lady Ducks completed the season sweep of La Grange on Tuesday with a 52-38 victory. The Lady Leopards can clinch a playoff berth on Tuesday with a win over Austin Achieve and will claim the No. 2 seed from the district with a Giddings loss to Taylor. … Thrall appears to be on a collision course with Milano for the District 27-2A championship. The TIgerettes won games against Granger and Bartlett last week to remain undefeated in district play. Thrall hosts Milano on Feb. 6. … Jarrell will clinch a playoff berth this week, needing just one win in its remaining three games to do so. … Wimberley finds itself in a race with Davenport for the final playoff spot in 27-4A. The playoff situation is in favor of the Lady Texans, who hold a 1½-game lead and a season sweep over Davenport.
