SCHERTZ โ It took the Wimberley Texans less than two minutes to establish its dominance in their area playoff Friday night at Lehnhoff Stadium in Schertz.
Junior quarterback Cody Stover needed just 80 seconds to score the first of his five total touchdowns in a 49-7 win over Orange Grove in a Class 4A, Region IV area playoff.
On the Texans’ ‘second play of the game, Stover launched a 70-yard missile to fellow junior Nolan Waida to put Wimberley (12-0) up 7-0 with 10:40 left in the first quarter. Two minutes later Stover connected with junior Ty Thames for a 3-yard scoring pass to extend the lead to 14 points over a outmatched Bulldogs’ defense.
“I liked how we came out early and set the tone and got that game under control pretty quick,” said Wimberley head coach Doug Warren. “We were able to play some kids in the second half, and that’s important. The further we get in the playoffs, the better the opponent we face. We played well (Friday night), but we still have a lot of room for improvement.”
The Texans and Stover didn’t let off the gas. Late in the first quarter, Stover ran in a 53-yard touchdown to move the lead with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.
After a quick Orange Grove 3-and-out, Stover took no time to launch a 57-yard touchdown pass to senior Wynston Burttschell in the first 45 seconds of the second quarter.
Senior running back Chase Carson wanted in on the scoring brigade and added touchdowns of 4 and 14 yards in just four minutes to extend Wimberley’s lead to 42-0.
In the final seconds of the first half, Stover found Waida for a 7-yard touchdown pass for Wimberley’s final score of the game.
“I think we have a lot of momentum, and I think we executed really well,” Stover said. “We can still play better. We gotta get in the film room and see what we messed up. Being up 49-0 doesn’t mean that we were perfect and that’s what we strive for.”
Orange Grove avoided the shutout with a 31-yard touchdown pass from Logan Rodriguez to Michael Sanez in the fourth quarter, but that was the only highlight of the night for the Bulldogs;
Wimberley will play Ingleside (10-1) in the round of 16 next weekend. The time, day and location has yet to be determined.
