Westlake (36-11) held off a comeback by San Antonio Brandies to defeat the Broncos 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 25-14, 23-25, 15-9) in a five-set thriller in a Class 6A area playoff at Smithson Valley on Thursday.
Junior Lilly Davis put down 28 kills and freshman Allie Hudgins added 13 to lead the Chaparral offensive assault. Davis also added 23 digs and three blocks.
Senior Reese Emerick led the defensive stand with 24 digs and added five service aces in the win. Senior Claire Wernli had 7 kills to go with a team-high four blocks.
The win sets up a potential rematch with Dripping Springs in the Class 6A, Region IV quarterfinals on Monday or Tuesday. The Tigers face San Antonio Madison on Friday.
Rouse def. San Antonio Southwest: At Dripping Springs High School in Dripping Springs, senior Jadyn Wilgus had 14 kills and junior Jade Key added 13 to will Rouse to a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-14) win in a Class 5A area playoff.
Senior Savannah Skopal totaled 40 assists, while senior Cameron Bradley and junior Mary Chipik had 11 digs apiece.
The Raiders (38-13) advances to the Class 5A, Region IV quarterfinals and will face District 25-5A rival Cedar Park, who defeated Alamo Heights in a five-set thriller.
Cedar Park def. Alamo Heights: At San Marcos High School in San Marcos, the Cedar Park Timberwolves pulled off the upset with a 5-set thriller, winning 3-2 (27-29, 25-15, 25-21, 23-25, 15-10) in a Class 5A area playoffs.Â
The Timberwolves (29-16) advance to the Class 5A, Region IV quarterfinals where they will face Rouse.Â
Liberty Hill def. Harlandale: At Canyon Lake High School in Canyon Lake, the Liberty Hill Panthers (42-8) took little time to pull off a 3-0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-13) win over Harlandale in a Class 5A area playoff. The Panthers advance to play New Braunfels Canyon in the Class 5A, Region IV quarterfinals.
Brenham def. McCallum: At Cedar Creek High School in Cedar Creek, the Brenham Brahmas ended McCallum’s season with a 3-0 (25-12, 25-13, 25-13) sweep in a Class 5A area playoff. Junior Greta Carlson led the Knights with six kills and five blocks. McCallum finished the season with a 29-18 overall record.
College Station def. East View: At Rockdale High School in Rockdale, the College Station Panthers defeated East View 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-15) in a Class 5A area playoff. The loss ends the Patriots’ season with a 181-24 overall record.
Wimberley def. El Campo: At Smithville High School in Smithville, Laney Hennessee had 12 kills and Addison Parks had four blocks as Wimberley won a Class 4A regional playoff 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-8). Jessee Weeks had 18 assists, while Rhagen Masur had 13 digs to go with three aces. The Texans (34-7) will play Bellville in a Class 4A, Region IV quarterfinal on Monday or Tuesday.
Salado def. Taylor: At East View High School in Georgetown, Taylor’s historic volleyball season came to an end. Salado defeated the Ducks 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-22, 25-18) in a Class 4A area playoffs. Taylor finished the season with a program-high 30 wins and an overall record of 30-14.
Thrall def. Shiner: At Smithville High School in Smithville, Thall kept its season alive with a 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 25-15, 25-14) win over Shiner in a Class 2A area playoff. The Tigers move on to face the winner of Burton-Weimar in the Class 2A, Region IV quarterfinals.
Schulenburg def. Thorndale: At Giddings High School, Thorndale’s season came to an end as Schulenburg defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 (27-25, 25-10, 25-15) in a Class 2A area playoff. Thorndale finishes with a 10-28 overall record.
