Week 9 Austin area football power rankings

There’s a bit of movement at the bottom, a newcomer, and a return in this week’s Austin Area power rankings. Week 8 of the 2023 high school football season is in the past. Losses by Vista Ridge and Round Rock knocks both teams out of the rankings.

Westwood (5-2) returns after their 17-14 win over rival McNeil and Dripping Springs (5-2) swaps places with red-hot Rouse (6-1). The Raiders are the hottest team in the Austin area and are inching closer to the District 11-5A-I championship.

The top four remain unchanged. Westlake (7-0) solidified its hold on the No. 1 spot with a 27-14 win over Dripping Springs on Friday. Vandegrift (7-0) remains at No. 2 after thumping Round Rock, and Weiss (8-0) and Lake Travis (5-1)  come in at No. 3 and 4, respectively.

Rouse jumps over Dripping Springs to move into the No. 5 spot, while the Tigers move back a spot to No. 6.

Wimberley (7-0) remains at No 7, while Georgetown moves up a spot to No. 8. Westwood (5-2) returns to the poll for a third time this season and comes in at No. 9. Liberty Hill (5-3) makes its debut in the power poll, having won three straight.

As always, teams are ranked regardless of classification and picked by On the Sidelines Sports Executive Director Michael Adams.

Dropped out: Vista Ridge (5-2), Round Rock (3-4)

Stock is rising: LBJ (4-3), Bastrop (5-3), Lago Vista (4-3)

Stock is falling: Travis (5-2), Vista Ridge (5-2)

Notable: The next three weeks will be interesting in District 25-6A. Vista Ridge, which still must face Round Rock and Vandegrift, is in a four-way tie with Westwood, Manor, and Stony Point for third place. Even at 1-3, you cannot count out McNeil, which could put themselves in the picture with a win over the Dragons on Friday… Bowie (3-4) took control over the fourth playoff spot in District 26-6A with a win over Johnson. The Jaguars aren’t out of the picture, but need to win two of their last three games… Cedar Park (4-3) got back to winning and currently has control of the final playoff spot in District 11-5A-I. The Timberwolves have a long road ahead, but a favorable schedule with a home game against Glenn (2-5) on Friday, a road game against Leander (1-6), and the regular season finale against Georgetown at Gupton Stadium.
