UTSA senior running back Robert Henry Jr. has been named to the Maxwell Award watch list, the Maxwell Football Club announced Thursday.
Henry is one of 13 midseason additions for the 89th Maxwell Award, presented annually to the college football player of the year. He is already on the watch lists for the Doak Walker and Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Awards. The Maxwell Award is given to the college football player of the year.
Through four games, Henry leads the FBS in rushing yards per game (156), all-purpose yards per game (180), yards per carry (9.18), scrimmage plays of 70-plus yards (5) and rushes of 70-plus yards (4). He has totaled 624 rushing yards and seven touchdowns on 68 carries, along with 96 receiving yards and two scores.
The Lumberton, Mississippi, native has delivered several explosive performances. He ran for 177 yards and two touchdowns against Texas A&M in the opener, added 159 rushing yards and three total scores against Texas State, posted 144 yards and two TDs versus UIW and recorded 220 all-purpose yards in the win at Colorado State, highlighted by a 76-yard rushing TD and a 74-yard touchdown catch.
Henry is the only FBS player this season with four rushes of 70-plus yards and five plays from scrimmage of 70-plus yards. He also became the first known player to score touchdowns within the first three plays of the second half in three consecutive games.
Over his three-year career, Henry has rushed for 1,918 yards (fifth in UTSA history) and 25 touchdowns (third). His 5.9 yards per carry is the best in school history, and he is riding a streak of six straight 100-yard rushing games.
