PFLUGERVILLE โย Weiss quarterback Jaxon Schad showed brilliance in the face of early adversity.
The sophomore was intercepted on his first pass attempt Friday against rival Hendrickson. After that, he torched the Hawks’ defense for 41-unanswered points, that included a 2-yard touchdown run in the final seconds of the first half to give the Wolves their first lead of the game.
Weiss defeated Hendrickson 42-21 in our Austin-area high school game of the week presented by Victoria Air Conditioning at The Pfield in Pflugerville in a pivotal District 12-5A-I matchup.
The Wolves move to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in district play, while the Hawks drop to 3-2 and 2-1.
Hendrickson made a statement early by putting together a long drive on the opening possession that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by quarterback Pete Vallejo Jr.
The Hawks defense intercepted Schad on his first pass attempt of the game and Vallejo gave Hendrickson a 14-0 early lead after a 3-yard touchdown run. That scoring play was set up by a 38-yard pass from Vallejo to Boykin.
However, Schad and his athletic offense took no time to get back into it with 21 points in the second quarter, which included back-to-back touchdown passes to Tre Moore and his 2-yard tush push touchdown. Weiss took a 21-14 lead into the locker room.
Schad opened the second half with two more touchdown passes, one to his brother Dallas Schad for 11-yards and another to Jayon Alexander from the 6-yard-line.
The Wolves are in third place in District 12-5A-I behind A&M Consolidated, who lost to Anderson 42-40 in six overtimes. The Trojans are in first place.
Hendrickson is in fourth place and holds the tiebreaker over Hays, who was off this week and is 1-1.
Weiss will host Cedar Creek Oct. 2 while Hendrickson will travel to College State for a game with playoff implications for the Hawks.
