From staff reports
After recording the first two shutouts of her career and helping Texas State (5-2-3) pick up two 1-0 victories, freshman goalkeeper Brooklyn Escobar was selected as the Sun Belt Conference’s defensive player of the week.
ย
Escobar, a 2025 graduate of Liberty Hill High School, finished the week with five saves spanning the wins at Georgia Southern and against Troy at home. She made four stops versus the Eagles with three coming in the second half. It marked her sixth contest over the last seven in which she stopped at least four shots.
ย
The Liberty Hill, Texas native faced 15 shots from the Trojans on Sunday night but just one was placed on frame. That came from Jiselle Daniels, the conference’s leading scorer, in the 61st minute. A diving one-handed save by the freshman goalkeeper kept the Bobcats in front.
ย
Escobar is just the third Texas State freshman goalkeeper to earn a weekly conference honor in program history and the first Texas State player to take home player of the week honors this season. The most recent goalkeeper was teammate Caitlyn Draper in 2023 and the first was Natalie Gardini in 2010.
ย
Next up for Escobar and the Bobcats is a home match against Georgia State Saturday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. from the Bobcat Soccer Complex.
