Preseason ASJ Power 15: Here are the best high school football teams in the area ahead of the 2025 season

This publication will preview Texas State and UTSA, along with with an in-depth look at the Austin area high school season with previews of all 84 schools in our coverage area. It will be available exclusively to All-Access and seasonal all-access subscribers.

To preview the 2025 season, we will release selected content to readers each day prior to the release.

Here is a look at the 15 best teams from the Austin-North San Antonio Region:

1. Vandegrift (14-2, 6A Division II state champion)

Quarterback Miles Teodecki and linebacker CJ Mooring lead the Vipers, who return talent and depth after capturing their first state title.

2. Westlake (14-2, 6A Division I state finalist)

The Chaps are loaded again, with quarterback Rees Wise and defensive lineman Maddox Flynt anchoring a roster with championship experience.

3. Lake Travis (12-2, 6A Division I regional finalist)

Quarterback Bo Edmundson and defensive linemen Carter Buck and Ben Duncan give the Cavaliers both firepower and toughness in the trenches.

4. Smithson Valley (15-1, 5A Division I state champion)

The Rangers broke through in 2024 with a state title, and with Hudson Woods and Justin Roberts returning, they’ll be a force again.

5. Liberty Hill (9-3, 5A Division II area finalist)

The Panthers’ slot-T attack continues to be a nightmare for defenses, with Bryce Muchaw leading another strong backfield.

6. Georgetown (9-3, 5A Division I area finalist)

The Eagles boast one of the best playmakers in Central Texas in running back Jett Walker, with Xavier Warren providing big-play ability at receiver.

7. Dripping Springs (10-2, 6A Division II area finalist)

The Tigers’ offense remains explosive behind receiver Cooper Reid, making them a consistent playoff threat in a stacked 6A landscape.

8. Wimberley (13-2, 4A Division II state finalist)

The Texans’ 2024 playoff run showcased their balance and resilience. With a core of returning starters, Wimberley should again be a state contender.

9. Lexington (11-2, 3A Division II regional semifinalist)

Quarterback Kase Evans headlines a loaded Eagles squad that combines physicality with explosive offensive talent.

10. Weiss (9-2, 6A Division II bi-district finalist)

Despite an early playoff exit, Weiss has high-end talent, including receiver Daniel Berry and linebacker Michael Dent III, that keeps them in the mix.

The Dragons are tough up front and return experience on both sides of the ball, led by quarterback Isaiah Brown.

Receiver Aiden Rodriguez leads a Raiders squad that’s looking to build on last year’s success and push deeper into the postseason.

13. Regents (10-2, TAPPS Division II state quarterfinalist)

Quarterback Jack Devine and receiver Davis Shouse give the Knights one of the most dynamic private-school passing attacks in the state.

14. Davenport (10-2, 4A Division I area finalist)

Quarterback Tucker McHugh and linebacker Mason Hart anchor a Wolves program that has quickly become one of the region’s most competitive.

15. Anderson (7-4, 5A Division I bi-district finalist)

Running back Caleb Crenshaw leads a veteran Trojans squad that could surprise in 2025 with both depth and skill talent.
