The Austin Sports Journal has been acquired by The Sports Journals LLC, a newly formed Austin-based media company.

As part of the acquisition, Austin Sports Journal founder and publisher Michael Adams will remain the majority owner and operator. He will also move into a full-time role beginning Aug. 1.

โ€œThis is a huge step forward for the Austin Sports Journal,โ€ Adams said. โ€œThe formation of The Sports Journals LLC creates a foundation for future growth and provides more resources and support to expand our coverage, strengthen our presence in the Austin area and deliver more local sports content than you will find anywhere.โ€

The acquisition was made possible through an undisclosed investment from a group of angel investors. The move will allow the ASJ to scale its operations, increase daily content offerings and enhance coverage to its fast-growing audience.

Adams will oversee daily advertising and editorial operations as publisher and executive editor. ASJ also plans to create two new roles โ€“ to be announced soon โ€“ and expand its network of freelance journalists.

This acquisition marks a significant milestone for the Austin Sports Journal, the cityโ€™s only locally owned and operated sports news outlet.

Adams founded the company in 2023 under the name On the Sidelines Sports. It rebranded in spring 2024 as the Austin Sports Journal and has since expanded its reach across 13 counties in the Austin-San Antonio metropolitan area.

The publication covers high school sports from 83 local high schools, as well as local colleges, including Texas State University and the University of Texas.

โ€œFrom day one, Iโ€™ve had a vision for what I wanted this to be,โ€ Adams said. โ€œThis partnership is about building for the future and doubling down on that mission. If you enjoyed our content before, youโ€™re really going to like what we do next.โ€
