Ben Waisman may have not picked up the win on the mound, but the Anderson senior still lifted the Trojans to victory Thursday.

Waisman went 2 for 3 at the plate with two doubles and four RBIs to help Anderson to a 7-2 win in the first of a best-of-three Class 5A Division II area round series against Victoria East.

The starting pitcher had a tad rougher day on the mound. Waisman pitched four innings and gave up five hits and two runs before Owen Thomas entered in the fourth inning and shutdown the Titans.

Thomas gave up no hits and no runs and struck out five batters and walked one in three innings of work. He was the game’s winning pitcher.

Victoria East tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second inning, which is where it stayed until the bottom of the fifth when Lee Trevino hit a two-run double to give the Trojans the lead.

Anderson added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning on Waisman’s three-run double. Once the damage had been done, Thomas retired the side.

The Trojans can close out the series Friday in Victoria. Game 2 is slated to begin at 5 pm. If necessary, Game 3 is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday at Weimar.
