Lily Muzzyโ€™s last high school jump was a scratch, but it didnโ€™t matter.

The decorated track and field athlete from Georgetown did enough on her second attempt in the Class 5A girls triple jump to claim her second straight UIL state gold medal in the event.

Muzzy leaped 40 feet, 4 inches in her second attempt Friday to separate herself from the field at the UIL track and field state meet at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.

While that distance may have been good enough to win, the future SMU track and field athlete was far from satisfied.

She added a half-inch to her gold-medal winning distance on her fifth attempt for insurance.

โ€œI always want to jump further, I have really high standards for myself and some goals I want to reach eventually,โ€ Muzzy said. โ€œBut I was comfortable with the jump. Having another 40 (foot jump) to my name was really important to me.โ€

Prosper Walnut Groveโ€™s Lauren Carrothersโ€™ jump of 39-11 on her final attempt was the closest to anyone got to Muzzy. Bronze medalist Caitlyn Johnson of Frisco Emerson had her best jump of 39-8.5, also on the final attempt.

Muzzy leaves behind a storied career at Georgetown that saw her reach the state meet all four years of high school. Winning her second state gold medal was the cherry on top.

โ€œItโ€™s so rewarding,โ€ she said. โ€œIโ€™ve worked so hard for this. It just shows all that Iโ€™ve accomplished in all four years of competing. Even if it wasnโ€™t my best jump, it shows how big of a competitor I am and how much I love the sport.โ€

In the morning, Muzzy competed in her fourth Class 5A girls long jump final where she placed fifth with a best jump of 18-7.25.
