GEORGETOWN โ€“ย Meredith Koltz and the Cedar Park Timberwolves were not intimidated by Frisco Wakeland’s mystique.

In fact, the Cedar Park senior scored a quick, early goal Friday in the seventh minute of the Class 5A Division II girls soccer state championship to put the defending state champions on notice.

Two minutes later, fellow senior Brooke Pack figuratively punched the Wolverines (25-1-1) in the mouth with a goal to give Cedar Park the 2-0 lead at Birkelbach Stadium in Georgetown.

Koltz added her second goal at the midpoint of the first half to give Cedar Park a commanding 3-0 lead as the Timberwolves went on to end Wakeland’s 54-game unbeaten streak and claim the school’s firs state championship.

“They made it known (they were on a 54-game unbeaten streak), but we wanted to make it know that we weren’t beating teams in the playoffs 6-0 because they weren’t at the same level,” said Koltz, who was named the game’s most valuable player. “We wanted to let them know that we are good and talented. A lot of people underestimated us, but Cedar Park came to play.”

The Timberwolves (25-2-1) dominated the first half with five shots to Wakeland’s three. Cedar Park goalkeeper Jemma Hart had seven saves on 13 shots by the Wolverines. Lily McCalmont became the only player to score on Hart in the playoffs when the freshman scored in the 75th minutes.

“The only way to beat this team is to get on them early, and we did,” said Cedar Park head coach Winston Pool. “We executed out first-half game plan to a T… to finish off one of the best teams in the nation, hats off to our girls. That’s unbelievable.”

For defensive back Sofia Peters, Friday morning’s win was a taste of revenge and a cherry on top of memorable senior year. Wakeland defeated Peters and the Timberwolves volleyball team in the Class 5A Division II state final in November.

“This is the perfect end to my high school career,” said Peters, who graduates next month. “I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
