Austin-area girls soccer rankings (3/6): Anderson makes big jump in 5A and two teams make debut in 4A

Several teams claimed district championships Tuesday, including Burnet (25-4A), Cedar Park (25-5A), Anderson (24-5A), Lake Travis (26-6A) and Round Rock (25-5A).

The Texas high school girls soccer playoffs start in two weeks and there are 26 teams from the Austin metropolitan area that have claimed their playoff spot.

The new playoff format will place teams into two divisions for all three classifications, just like the format used in Class 6A football.

Four teams from each district will make the playoffs and be split into two divisions for each classification. Itโ€™s the same format used for Class 6A football. The two teams with the highest enrollment will be in the Division I bracket, while the two with the smallest enrollment will be in Division II.

Also new for the upcoming playoffs is that state semifinal games will take place at neutral sites instead of at Georgetownโ€™s Birkelbach Stadium, the longtime home of the UIL soccer state tournament. Only championship games will be played in Georgetown from April 10-12.

District 29-6A is going to be a race to keep an eye on, but not because playoff spots are on the line. All four spots are accounted four. Cibolo Steele has clinched the district title, but Buda Johnson, New Braunfels Canyon and San Marcos are separated by one point.

The Jaguars are in second place by 19 points, while the Cougars and Rattlers are tied with 18 points. Steele and Johnson are going to be the two Division I representatives, while Canyon and San Marcos will be in the Division II bracket. The Rattlers and Cougars face each other in the regular season finale on March 14 at Toyota Rattler Stadium in San Marcos.

This weekโ€™s rankings

Rankings are determined each week by information reported on MaxPreps. The ASJ uses overall records and strength of schedule to rank teams for each classification. Private schools are considered for the 4A & others top five.
