SAN MARCOS – San Antonio Harlan may be this year’s Cinderella in the UIL boys basketball playoffs.
The clock has yet to strike midnight on the Hawks (26-10), and on Friday, the glass slipper still fit like a glove.
Sophomore Josiah Jones passed the ball from the opposite end of the court to an open Knowledge Carter, who sank a layup at the buzzer to stun Stony Point (32-5) and end the Tigers season.
It was the third straight playoff game Harlan won by three or less points, including last week’s 52-51 area playoff win over Vandegrift and Tuesday’s 53-50 regional semifinal victory over Schertz Clemens.
The comeback kids from San Antonio’s west side put together another miraculous playoff comeback Friday night.
Harlan erased a third-quarter 15-point deficit to claim the 75-73 victory in the Class 6A Division II Region IV championship game at San Marcos High School.
Carter, a senior, scored 15 points, of which 11 came in the second half. Jones led the Hawks with a team-high 19 points, while Kameron Williams added 12.
Stony Point pulled away in the second quarter to take a 46-32 lead at haltime. Senior Uzziah Buntyon scored a game-high 25 points, while fellow senior Landon Short added 18.
Harlan’s halftime adjustments isolated the Tigers’ two guards, holding them to a combined 11 points in the second half.
Harlan advances to the state semifinals and will play Katy Jordan.
