One day after Westwood head football coach Anthony Wood announced his retirement, Hutto ISD announced it will also be looking for a new head football coach.

The district announced Friday that current head coach Will Compton was taking over as the district’s athletic director. He will take over for Brad LaPlante, who is now the athletic director for Montgomery ISD near Houston.

Compton has been the head football coach at Hutto in 2022 when he replaced LaPlante, who was coach of the Hippos from 2018-2022. LaPlante’s son, Cashton, is a senior at Hutto and was a linebacker and long snapper for the Hippos.

Compton was 13-18 in his three years as head coach with one playoff appearance in 2023.

Hutto ISD is in the planning phase of opening a second high school within the district in the near future. Voters passed a $522 million bond in May of 2023 that included $451.5 million to fund construction of two new elementary schools and expansion of the ninth grade campus into a full high school.

Hutto is the fourth head coach opening in the Austin area. Giddings, Cedar Creek and Westwood will also have new coaches in 2025.
