The Wimberley Texans are one step closer to the school’s seventh volleyball state championship.
Wimberley (41-3) dominated Salado and was near perfect, cruising to a 25-17, 25-11, 25-22 victory Tuesday in a UIL Class 4A Division II state semifinal at St. Edwards University in Austin.
“I’m speechless,” said first-year head coach Misty Fletcher-Remmers. “I’m so proud of these girls and their fight. The’ve worked hard all sesaon to get to this point and now they are in a position to try and win a state championship.”
The Eagles (40-8) had no answer for Wimberley’s offensive assault led by Alabama-signee Laney Hennessee, who put 18 kills past Salado’s staunch frontline defense.
The Texans dominance over Salado’s net defense was the story of the game.
The Eagles had a clear size advantage with middle blockers’ Elise Law (6-foot-2), Macy Morris (5-10) and outside hitter Kael Wilcox (6-3). Salado had four players with heights 6-feet or above to Wimberley’s one.
The Eagles didn’t hold a lead until the early moments of the third set. Wimberley amassed leads of 10 points or more in the each of first two sets while the Eagles’ looked shellshocked in front of a standing-room only crowd at St. Edward’s University’s Recreation and Athletics Center.
St. Edwards’s gym has a seating capacity of 1,300 for basketball and volleyball games. With the overflow, the estimated crowd was about 1,500 with a good mix of Wimberley and Salado fans.
“You know, they used to play these games in Garland, but after seeing this crowd and playing in this atmosphere, I don’t think you could have replicated that in Garland,” Fletcher-Remmers said.
Wimberley moves on to its first state championship appearance since 2020, and a chance to win its first state title since 2007. The Texans will face Canyon Randall (33-12) Friday at 4 p.m. at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
