SAN ANTONIO – A rematch with Plano East has been in the back of the minds of Stony Point players and coaches since Dec. 30.

On that day, Plano East (38-0) handed Stony Point (37-1) its only loss of the season in the championship game of the Championship BasketbalL Tournament at Mansfield Legacy High School in Mansfield, Texas.

Since then,  the Tigers have been seething for another chance to sink their teeth into the Panthers.

They get their wish Saturday night in the Class 6A state championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Stony Point defeated Beaumont United 54-46 in a Class 6A semifinal on Friday at the UIL boys basketball state tournament, assuring the rematch with Plano East, who defeated Mansfield Lake Ridge 61-45 in the other semifinal assuring the rematch.

Saturday’s state championship will feature two nationally-ranked teams. Plano East is ranked No. 3 in the nation by MaxPreps, while Stony Point is ranked No. 7.

“This is what we wanted,” said Stony Point head coach Antonie Thompson. “It’s been in the back of these guy’s mind since that loss. We got to get some rest and be ready to play, because we know (Plano East) will be ready for us.”

Stony Point got a big game on Friday from senior Uzziah Buntyn, who scored 19 points, with 11 of those coming in the second half as Beaumont United (34-3) honed in on Villanova-signee Josiah Moseley.
