Shelbyville pulls away in second half to end Thrall’s historic season in 2A semifinal

Tigers ‘leave it all on the court’ and bid farewell to retiring coach

SAN ANTONIO โ€“ Thrall led for 26 seconds and did everything it could.

However, Shelbyville went on an 11-0 run after the Tigers took their brief lead in the third quarter of a Class 2A state semifinal at the Alamodome and defeated Thrall 67-52 to advance to Saturday’s state championship game.

That 11-0 run was the difference.

Thrall (30-6) out-rebounded Shelbyville 44-30, which included 23 offensive rebounds. The Tigers had 12 fewer turnovers, scored 26 second-chance points to the Dragons’ three and had three players record triple doubles.

Yet, Thrall struggled to make a basket in the second half and was 17 of 37 from field goal range.

“This game has a lot of ebbs and flows, and it wasn’t flowing for us in the second half,” said head coach Charles Tindol, who is retiring and coached his last game on Friday. “Thinking about this journey, the trip to state, and all the things we’ve accomplished, we’re all a family here and we got to do it with friends and family. That’s what matters.”

The shots wer falling for the Tigers in the first half. Thrall made 13 of 29 field-goal attempts and was 3 for 9 from three-point ranges.

Seniors Steven Walker and Dawson Meiske combined for 22 first-half points. Thrall tied the game before the half on a three-pointer from Breken Proctor with 1:10 left.

Walker finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Meiske had a team-high 17 points to go with 15 rebounds. Senior Ethan Dahl also finsihed with a double double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 13 rebounds.

Dahl gave Thrall it’s only lead of the game from a three-pointer at the 5:12 mark in the third quarter. Shelbyville (29-7) responded on a field goal by Weston Frick that started a 11-0 run by the Dragons to pull away.

Junior DJ Barnes scored a game-high 23 points for Shelbyville, while junior Ja’Davian Mathis adder 22.

“I’m just beyond proud of everybody,” Meiske said. “When we got in the playoffs, we got on a bit of a hot streak. We left everything out on that court and played our hearts out. I’m proud of everything we’ve done.”
