LAKEWAY โ€“  The Lake Travis Cavaliers on Tuesday were out for revenge for a home loss to Buda Johnson  near the end of the 2022-23 season.

The Cavaliers got their revenge in impressive fashion; however, Lake Travis may be without a star player for some time.

Lake Travis cruised to a 73-57 win over the Jaguars in front of a raucous packed house at the Cavalier Dome at Lake Travis High School in the On the Sidelines Sports Boys Basketball Game of the Week.

The Cavaliers (22-3, 7-0 District 26-6A) opened with a 17-2 run in the first five minutes of the game. However, the game took a scary turn when star forward Hudson Greer hit the floor hard after a dunk in the early moments of the first quarter and left the game. The 4-star recruit didnโ€™t return. Greerโ€™s status was unknown after the game.

With a15-point lead, Lake Travis used its height advantage and athleticism to make up for Greerโ€™s absence and held onto its 15-point lead heading into the second quarter.

โ€œCoach called a lot of great plays to get the ball inside the paint, because we knew we had a height advantage,โ€ said senior forward Jayden Thomas, who finished with 15 points. โ€œThis was an important win. Weโ€™re built to win (this district), and they were the second-best team. Also, they beat us at home last year, so we want to come show what we could do.โ€

The Jaguars (19-5, 6-1) tried to claw back into the game, but Lake Travis maintained their lead and took a 38-21 into the locker room at halftime.

As the third quarter unfolded, Lake Travis continued to dominate, ending the quarter with a commanding 59-41 lead with was too big for Buda Johnson to overcome.

โ€œNo matter who the opponent is, if we take care of ourselves, weโ€™re good,โ€ said Lake Travis head coach Brandon Shaver. โ€œWeโ€™re a pretty tall high school team, going up a against guys that are 6-7, 6=9, thatโ€™s pretty tough and our guys know how to use that to their advantage.โ€

Lake Travis junior guard Adrian Mathis scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Cavaliersโ€™ offensive barrage, while Chas Biegel and Ethan Birchall added 10 and 9 points, respectively.

Sam McKinney led the charge for the Jaguars with a game-high 24 points while Zeriah Kincaid added 15. Lake Travis held Buda Johnsonโ€™s standout guards Jack Untermeyer and Jaxon Vandegarde to a combined eight points.

Both teams will wrap up the first round of district play on Friday.
