Big shake up in this week’s Class 5A boys basketball rankings

Stony Point, Thrall keep hold of top spots in Class 6A and 4A-below polls, respectively

Here is On the Sidelines’ Sports top five high school boys basketball teams in Class 6A, Class 5A and Class 4A-below in the Greater Austin Metro Area.

Notes: Not much is different in this week’s Greater Austin Metro Area Class 6A Power 5 rankings. Stony Point, Lake Travis and Buda Johnson maintained their hold on the top three spots, respectively. The Cavaliers and Jaguars have a huge District 26-6A showdown in On the Sidelines Sports’ Austin Metro Boys Basketball Game of the Week on Tuesday… Vandegrift has won three straight games, including Friday’s 81-74 win over McNeil in which Mark Fletcher scored a game-high 37 points… San Marcos rounds out the rankings at No. 5. The Rattlers will start District 27-6A play this week against Schertz Clemens.

Notes: Our Class 5A poll had a big shakeup this week after Elgin and Cedar Creek both lost to Connally, while the Wildcats also dropped a District 23-5A game to the new No. 1 team in our Class 5A rankings, Georgetown. The Eagles have won seven straight games since losing to Liberty Hill on Dec. 15. A big game awaits Georgetown on Tuesday at Hendrickson, the No. 3 team in our class 5A rankings… Rouse moves back into the No. 2 spots while McCallum and Liberty Hill move back into the rankings… The Knights have the longest-active winning streak among area Class 5A teams at eight games… Speaking of streaks, the Panthers have won six straight since dropping the district opener to Leander on Dec. 19.

Notes: Thrall maintains the top spot in our Class 4A-below Power 5 rankings. The Tigers lost a 45-43 battle with Holland on Friday, but should bounce back this week against Hearne and Milano before a huge showdown at Thorndale on Dec. 19… Thorndale, our No. 2 team, takes the Austin area’s longest-active winning streak of nine games into Holland on Tuesday… Lago Vista drops down a spot to No. 2 and will start District 24-4A play this week with the second-best record in the district… La Grange, a newcomer to On the Sidelines Sports’ coverage area, joins the rankings at No. 4. The Leopards have won seven straight games and are undefeated in District 22-4A… Wimberley rounds out this week’s rankings at No. 5 after losing to Boerne on Friday. It was the Texans’ second straight loss.
